"Tastes like cotton candy summers, and long watermelon nights, filled with bubblegum breezes, and soda pop lights. Tastes like bright waffle mornings, and sunset popsicles, like warm lemonade stands, and melted ice cream cones. These are my memories, they're the flavors of my life." -Flavors of My Life

Kids are wiser than we think

The wisdom of young kids sometimes amazes me. Recently I went to visit my grandparents. My grandpa is getting older and his health isn't as good, so he is often worn down. Walking in, I see my five year old cousin, who is the epitome of hyperactive intelligence, sitting quietly holding my grandpa's hand. Not talking, just enjoying being with his grandpa. Seeing me, he pulled out a chair and called me over so that I could hold Grandpa's other hand. The tenderness of the moment touched me. This boy would normally rather be jumping on the tramp or teasing his older siblings was sensitive enough to know his grandpa needed his company. I feel like everything we ever need to know about being Christlike we can learn from children. "From the mouth of babes..."

You are Special

Lately I've been thinking a lot about how much everyone needs to be loved. Many people don't realize it, but I think we all need love more than food, water, or air. (ok, we can't enjoy the first if we lack the last, but you get the point.) I meet new people, and every time love is given you get so much more in return. Love defies the laws of physics. You can never reach an equilibrium, because when you give it you'll always get more back. Even if the person you're giving love to doesn't reciprocate, the Lord does.
This makes me realize how much fun loving people is. I once can across a quote that, by trying to follow it, has made my life much more exciting, fun, and downright adventurous. "When you walk into a room, pretend everyone is wearing a sign that says, 'make me feel important.' If any of those signs are left when you leave the room, you have not accomplished much." (This is also much more fun if you imagine the signs in different colors with elaborate fonts to fit each person's personality. Just say'n)
Is it any wonder that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ teach us that the foundation of the gospel and of truth is to "love one another" and to  "love God with all thy might, mind, and strength" and that charity was the number one trait Christ exhibited while on earth? I mean, we all know that doing service for others makes us feel good, but I'm slowly learning that doing service for others is something you can live off of entirely. Instead of tiring you, it's like a sugar high without the crash (or the sugar) (<- that was a useless comment. As was this.)
So find someone who looks downcast, whose steps are heavy, and their eyes have lost their glow. Tell them "you are special" and most importantly; mean it.

Gotta start somewhere

So for a long time I've had a problem with too many thoughts and not enough space. It's not that my brain is too small, it's just that I'd rather fill it with useful stuff, like what I'm supposed to be learning in college and church. But where to put it? A physical book would take up too much room (it's not worth killing the trees, in fact, it's almost an insult to their sacrifice of becoming paper.) and frankly I don't have the hard drive space on my computer. So the internet is lucky option number three. (Bwahaha) Of course, having these thoughts out in cyberspace may tilt the balance of the universe, but I'm willing to risk it. Plus, I need to learn to write better and with more flow if I'm ever going to finish any of my books. Hopefully it may occasionally provide a good laugh (burn'n calories!) and we might even find an uplifting thought or two. So onward, and may the future be as good as the present (cause it's pretty awesome).
